Grand Theft Friday

A private GTA V server for seven mates. Nobody planned this far ahead — it's Friday, and that seemed like reason enough. Season one was one night, Friday 4 September, and it's finished.

The season one report

7 players · 6½ hours · 762 deaths

The whole night, narrated back at you like a news bulletin: nine armed robberies, ninety-nine different vehicles, £224,480 taken off the dead, and a death every thirty seconds, all night.

Every number in it came off the night's own telemetry, marks and console ledger. Where the data wouldn't carry a claim, the claim was cut rather than softened.

Sixteen minutes, sixty-one panels, in-game footage and the real map tracks played back. Loads better with the sound on and the phone sideways.

Dispatch

Dispatch is the app. It knows your money, your motors, and exactly what you're allowed to see. Looking is public; touching anything needs a key.

Season two

Coming. There is no date, and there won't be one here until there is one. What exists so far is the design, not the night.

The mode is being rebuilt. Night one dealt nine armed robberies, the police won all nine, and not one man got away — so Nick of Time is being cut back rather than built bigger. Season two is mostly subtraction.

Beside it, a second gametype: Protection. One man has somewhere to be, two or three are paid to get him there, and one man in the crowd is paid to make sure he never arrives.

The server's still up

Season's over. The box isn't off, and people still wander about on it.
